There have always been gender independent kids – kids who march to a different beat when it comes to gender. Yet in recent years, we are witnessing a profound shift in how these kids are seen and treated, especially by health and mental health professionals. Pathologized for decades through the diagnosis of “gender identity disorder in children”, a new generation of young people are re-writing the rules of gender. A new generation of parents and professionals are following their lead. This Café Scientifique event will bring together researchers, parents, health and social service providers and activists to dialogue about how we can better support families with gender independent children. Join us for a panel discussion and audience dialogue to learn about: - The history of pathologizing treatment for gender independent kids - The issues that families with gender independent children are facing today - The research and advocacy work being done across the province to address these challenges - What we as service providers, health care workers, researchers, community members, and activists, can do to better support gender independent children. Panel speakers will include researchers, doctors, parents and activists. Speakers to be announced. Wednesday September 25th 7:00-9:30 pm This event is free and wheelchair accessible. The Bisexual Pride/Anti-Stigma Campaign was developed to help bring visibility to bisexual people in our communities. The buttons were developed and funded by Rainbow Health Ontario in partnership with the Researching LGBT Health Team at the Centre for Addiction and Health in Toronto.
